If something advances the storyline it adds to the plot. Some elements in a story set the scene, others provide background info for the characters to make them more realistic and to justify or explain their present actions whilst other elements actually advance the storyline.

It is a writing technique. To "advance" a storyline is to keep the story flowing. Someimes a story will stall in the middle when there is nothing to keep the reader interested.

It means that the event or element deepens the plot, or tells more about character motivation or in some way or other moves the story along towards the climax and conclusion.

Foreshadowing. Alot of books, or movies start at the end ( you get a glimps at the end of the book or movie) and then it goes back and tells the story from the beginning.
