as a first step, since you said that the check engine light comes on "sometimes" i would take it to Auto zone and see if they can get a code off of it... All of the answers submitted so far are "plausible" but it is strange that it runs OK in reverse. I would like to know what the code is first

This is one of things that if you ask 12 people they will tell you 12 things that would cause this problem.
You can get a code reader and see if that gives you a clue. These can be bought for about $20 now or borrowed from a friend. I believe that autozone and other parts houses will run a code on your car for free.
If you really want to know take it to a shop that will charge you about $100 for a real diagnostic.
Either way you better get ready to set a value on your car and how much you are willing to put out to fix it. Little problems like this can run into big money quickly.

you need to find out what trouble code is in the system, if the engine stalls when coming to a stop and restarts fine and runs fine until you put it in gear then stalls again it is most likely the tcc solenoid (torque converter clutch solenoid) it would be like coming to a stop with a manual trans without depressing the clutch thus stalling the engine. the engine will run fine while moving or in park will stall (hot engine) when coming to a stop or when put in gear

Chevy's are cool, you need to have the codes read, take it to a local shop and have them read the codes, and they can most likely pin point the problem. Really need to know know more history on this car, like maintenance. tune ups etc. but reading the codes is a great place to start so you don't spend money on parts you don't need. I hate that. Good Luck Dave

One of the common problem these cars have is the torque converter lockup solenoid - when it's bad it feels like the car transmission is engaged all the time. If that's the case, visit your mechanic, it can be replaced without taking the tranny apart.
Although other problems also possible - idle control for example.
