I guess we think about what we'd be thinking about if we were thinking, but since we don't think too much, what we'd be thinking about if we were thinking is a moot point! :)

...Great answers

Hmm yes I too would like to join this support group for people who've been accused of thinking too much.

Presumably whats behind such a question from partners/friends etc is a perception that our overthinking is in some way unhealthy or harmful. I can certainly see pros and cons in deep thinking:

PROS: being reflective, considered, perceptive etc can lead to deeper insights, personal growth and the advancement of knowledge...

CONS: pitfalls include excessive introspection, anxiety, obsessiveness (just look at the first 4 letters of the word analytical), procrastination...

But in general I like being a bit of a thinker - the capacity to think is an amazing thing when you think about it - go on you know you want to - and most of us have such hectic lives that we don't have enough time to think about the deeper issues in life.

Good question

You can't think too much. The only way that you learn is by thinking and we can always improve. So keep on thinking!

I think about everything including about thinking. But I don't think that I think too much - I don't believe that is possible. I certainly don't think as much as Einstein. It is said that he thought for about 9 years before he came up with his theory of relativity. Newton was pretty much the same - he thought about the same thing day after day for up to 18 hours a day for years and years and discovered gravity, the properties of light and the Calculus which he called fluxions. Now nobody said these people thought too much!

They dont I think thats the point. Met a lot of really shallowpeople in my life but I think I suffer the same as you. Sometimes I think I miss out on the "moment" but I wouldn't have it any other way. I reckon they just stumble from one moment to the next.
This wont be the first answer in, I had to think about it a bit!

I'm in the same boat as you, I have been told I think too much. I have wondered the same thing as you do. I think (no pun intended) that thinkers keep most of their thoughts to themselves whereas the ones who are not "thinkers" are talkers. The thoughts we have in our heads come out of their mouths instead and since they are not thinking, their brains are more active in the areas not associated with analyzing and intellecting. They do not seem to ponder their thoughts and go forth in a non-thinking way.

If you didn't think at all you would disappear according to Descartes, if you reverse the famous attribution
i.e I don't think therefore I am not ...
Sometimes thinking about an horrific event is a choice, but I suspect some people opt out of this choice by default!

I really don't think that they think period. I had a boyfriend who said I think too much and that thinking hurt his brain. When I asked him what he was thinking when he was silent, he'd look me in the eyes and say nothing and you know what, I believe him. I really think that he was not thinking at all. His brain was just jelling. The asians who have created yoga (from India to China) ask you to empty your mind during yoga. I have yet to achieved that. But, I am achieving other things slowly. I think when we have the power to empty our minds, we actually have the power to live longer and stronger to be able to turn them back on and also be more patient. It takes patience to be able not to think.

How do you tell if a person does not think too much? It sounds like your partner thinks too much about what you are thinking.

Good for you, thinking is good and expands the mind leaving it open to lots of ideas and understandings, those who don't have much to think about must live sad life's, you know what they say if you don't use it then you lose it, keep on thinking OK.

I've always wondered this myself.

For example, a human always has to be thinking, right?? The brain doesn't just stop thinking... I mean I don't think it could anyway.

But haven't you met someone who looks like their not thinking. And when you talk to them, you can tell they arent intelligent.

So could they actually not be thinking? Functioning, but nothing is going on in their thoughts?

I don't know....

Even when I'm high I'm thinking about something... but maybe I'm just accustomed to thinking?
