I've just finished my first year of college and Div. 1 swimming. To be honest with you, it was a huge commitment and a lot of work. I walked on to the team during orientation and won a varsity spot. The most important thing I can tell you is that I don't regret for a moment having joined the team.

The most important thing initially is going to be what division you're swimming in. I was recruited by div. II and III teams, but aimed for div. 1, which worked out for me. In all three divisions the amount of work you'll have to put in will be big, but more is expected in the higher divisions (1 being the highest). Know that you will have to devote a lot of time to practice and workouts, but also know that you'll make the best friends of your life on the team. While swimming will take up a huge amount of the time your not in class, you'll also have time for a social life and other activities.

Read the new book by Natalie Coughlin. Very interesting about Natalie and particularly her experience at Cal. Very good.
