I didn't ask for the types of taste buds. Working together, how many different tastes can we discern? Or does every really just taste like chicken?

Humans can taste only five different flavours:
sweet
sour
salt
bitter and
umami.
The last named is a kind of meat taste like msg. All of the the different tastes of food and drink (and drugs, poisons) are a combination of the above TOGETHER with smell. We can smell a huge number of odors. You could try an interesting experiment on this. Get someone to blindfold you and serve you various pureed foods. They need to be pureed to avoid texture cues.

You can find more detail about the sense of taste at the link below.

There are an infinite number of possible flavors. There are four basic kinds of taste buds, sensitive to sweet, salty, bitter, and sour tastes. Flavors are really combinations of these different tastes, and the possibilities for how these can combine, with different balances of two or more tastes, are almost endless.

Who knows....I surely have the same question about colour. We both see a colour, someone tells us that what we are seeing is "eco-friendly". how are you going to quantify even if what I call eco-friendly is what you call eco-friendly? similar with flavor. You advance up your mom tells you, "the following devour this it really is sweet". properly how do you describe "sweet", for all all of us comprehend what you're tasting as sweet perhaps what i'm tasting as salty. you are able to in easy words adventure what you are able to adventure!!

Almost infinite, however there are those poor few who can't taste anything at all. Those who have defective or destroyed olfactory sensors...sad
