See, for example, the symbol of the team Washington Redskins:

Or the mascot of the Cleveland Indians:

If there were such caricatures of other groups around, the teams would be accused of insensitive and they'd have to change them!

Also, how many Native Americans play important roles in movies, for example?

How come no one cares that all representations of Natives are stereotypical and demeaning, but when they happen to Blacks or Jews there's hell to pay?

as a native american.. well half native american anyway.. i dont find it as insulting as i do find it unfair. If somebody says something bad about a certain race or religion, its considered racist, but yet, if its about a native american, nobody thinks twice about it.

I agree with your question, but i don't know the answer!

its a good question tho!

Why is it that Indian mascots and the like are suddenly racist? These team names were adopted as representative of proud warrior traits, not to make fun of Indians. As for representatives of Native Americans being demeaning, that simply is not true.

Native Americans are also pretty autonomous, they don't have to abide by gambling rules and don't pay taxes, and they gets tons of other breaks as well. That's why there are so many Native American casinos. It's a trade off.

Yes, I agree. I think it's because Native Americans have yet to gain some power and voice in mainstream culture, but I think it is changing.
