The previous answer mentioning Latin was mistaken.

Homo sapiens is the scientific name of humankind. Scientific names are generally Latinate, and this is no exception. "Homo" means "man" (in the sense of person rather than simply male) and "sapiens" means wise.

"Homosexual," however, comes from Ancient Greek. "Homo" means "same," and I figure the rest of it is obvious enough for you to figure out.

The "homo" in "homo sapiens" and the "homo-" in "homosexual" come from separate languages and do not at all mean the same thing.

Also, since Homo sapiens is the scientific name of mankind, they're hardly extinct. You and I are testimony to that. If you wanted to pick out an extinct species that shares the Homo genus with us, try any of the other species on this wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_%28genus%29 . If you find your question amusing, you'll probably also find "Homo erectus" amusing. Have fun.

Actually, guys, just to clarify: we're not Homo sapiens. We are Homo sapiens sapiens.

However, the same answer still applies: Mr. Asker, you're an idiot. And if H. sapiens sapiens were extinct, then I could hardly expect to be typing this answer out, now could I?

Homo Sapiens, our fairly primitive ancestors are supposed to be extinct, but one of them is still around asking this question !

Homo may refer to:

Homo, the genus of humans and closely related species like Neanderthals.

HOMO/LUMO, Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital

Swedish Ombudsman against Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation, short form: HomO

Slang for a homosexual person, generally considered offensive in the United States and Canada.

In etymology, homo is a greek word meaning "same". Contrast this to hetero, which means "other", or "different".

thanks for the two points..........

Homo is/was Latin meaning "Same"

Sapien is/was Latin meaning "Wise"

Homo didn't become derogatory until anti-homosexuals popped up on the sceen determined to make homosexuals feel bad.

Um...homo sapiens is *us*, dumbass.

Well, maybe not you, because the term "sapiens" comes from the Latin for "knowing" or "wise."

you have seriously misconstrued the meaning of the word homosapien. homosapien refers to humas as a species, the word has nothing to do with being gay just because it has homo in it.
