A deck hand does anything the captain wants done. It starts with loading the boat at the dock, stowing gear, hoisting sail, trimming sail, setting anchor, weighing anchor, possible galley duties, lowering the dinghies, raising the dinghies,. Knowledge of the lake will be gained while working. Lake Michigan has some big freighters, tankers, and other vessels without sails but diesel engines to work.

The Deckhand is an entry level position on any ship. He/she will do some painting, cleaning of the inside of the vessel, He/she will also scrub the outside of the vessel.He/she will handle lines to tie and untie the vessel. then after a time period, they can become an A/B ( able-seaman) for more pay. but, still doing the same Job. You usually do not have to have any experience to start on board a ship.
