I play piano, my friend plays guitar. We're good at the instruments we play, and are looking to form a new genre of rock music evolving from rock and jazz. In order to do that, we need some direction and someone to evolve from.

Some bands we like are Led Zeppelin, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and other rock/jazz musicians.

I realize some bands with guitar/piano are Counting Crows, Coldplay, etc. but those bands aren't really what we're looking to evolve from.

Any ideas?

I'm happy to answer this question.

In my opinion, the album Matador, by Grant Green has great songs and great musicians. Grant Green plays guitar and McCoy Tyner (of Coltrane's band) plays piano. It's funny you ask this question because I think that for Green and Tyner, this is their best playing on any album, separate or together (including stuff with Coltrane). The rest of the band is Elvin Jones (also form Coltrane's band) on drums. I suggest any album with Elvin on drums, he pushes the soloists. Bob Cranshaw plays a great bass throughout the whole album.

Also, you might like...
Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow album. It's a fusion album (rock/jazz). It's more rock than jazz but more creatively written than most rock albums.
John Ellis's By a Thread album. This album is a modern jazz album. Mike Moreno plays a unique style guitar and Aaron Goldberg is a really creative piano player. This isn't Ellis's best album but it is really good.

I hope I could be of service.

I'm a rocker, but the first thing that comes to mind is Billy Joel, and Elton John. Billy Joel "Does" rock. Both are excellent pianists, and songwriters.
