Good: crime is low, there are many conveniences and touches of home (KFC, McDonalds, and other fast foods), DSL internet, getting around without a car is cheap, you can have any food, groceries, or dry-cleaning delivered, and of course the Egyptian sites. Also, many ex-pats to meet and socialize with.

Bad: it's mostly hot, the city has around 18 million people, non-stop traffic, it's polluted and dirty (you won't believe how much garbage is on the ground at the pyramids in Giza), the call from the mosques at 4:30 AM, many people are trying to get you to either give them money or buy something from them, and SOME of the men are really disrespectful toward Western women. I don't care to elaborate about that on this forum.

You're already going, so make the most of it. Ma el salama.

Egypt is unlike anyelse where in the world .. i call it the country of contradicts .. you got to know that ..

of course it depends on the purpose you will be going there for .. you got to prepare yourself for a totally different experiene with the sites, the systems, and with the people ..

from the smell of ancient history times to the latest trends and youth fashions .. from the deepest, sympathetic and kind poor women to the untra liberal sedutive and sometimes porno activities of crazy some.
from the very disorganized dirty or poorly shaped houses to the top of calss restaurants, rsorts hotels piece od art architeture and private villas .. similar to those in beverly hils ..

you will be driving into an ocean of people .. a sky high piles of ideas, arguments, books and pretty thoughts of movie makers and pop singers ..

you'll be living on top of 7000 years of culture with little things to criticize ..

At last .. you got to love Egypt and Egyptians as a phenomena .. not just a country .. as if they are the residual blend of all world history cultures and nations .. coz it was there where all history empires were melt down to mix with the core of the valley stream and the water and clay of the river Nile ..

You should have given more information to where you would be staying, I will assume for the time being it is Cairo.

Cairo is a huge city with around 15 million inhabitants, so it is a busy, crowded city. Try to get a house in the outskirts where it is less noisy.

For someone who has not lived in Cairo, it can be a shock in the begining because of the congestions etc, but you get used to that after a while.

Cairo is fun, there is always something to do. Night life is hot, pubs, restaurants, cafes etc.

The people are friendly & hospitable.

It's like a big hot sand box with no running water so people have to deficate in a hole dug in the desert, and the wind sandblasts your skin into an aligator skin texture. If you go to the more modern areas they have running water but you have to hide from the armed gunmen that walk the streets. It's really quite nice......I'm sure you'll love it.
