Back in college, my friends and I use to talk about having standards (code of ethics, morals, etc...). That includes having your stuff (the nice way of putting it) together. Don't give me comments about the pres GWB, because if I see him give that look of "deer in headlights" again, I will scream. And, his staff is not much better. Has the idea of actually having standards and holding others as well as yourself accountable really gone out the window. Because, sometimes, I think it has. It could be because I live and work in the D.C. area. Maybe there is something in the water here?

Honestly, I see a lot of evidence that people *want* to have ethical standards, cultivate a value system, etc, but the problem seems to be that people are too stupid to think critically about ethical issues and come up with reasonable conclusions. Every day I am appalled at the stupidity of the people around me.

The two answers above mine are great examples. They seem upset that a previous president had consensual sex with another adult, but not that that the current president started a war on false pretenses that's killed over 30,000 innocent men, women, and children. Or that the current president has done everything in his power to help corporations rape the environment for increased profits.

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach
their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
-- H.L. Mencken (1880-1956)

Nope, I agree with you. However, today's political correctness says that we can't hold anyone else to our own standards, at least not publicly. After all, they may be from a culture with different values or be differently-abled mentally or psychologically, so how dare we make any expectations about their conduct? It's an absurd way to look at the world, but you get labeled a bigot if you disagree too loudly.

You don't want any comment about GWB, but you're free to make them? I was in DC when the clintons were there. We won't go down the road of lack of standards, ethics,& morals etc.

We are seeing the fallout of "moral relativism". This is what happens when we adopt the "It's wrong for me, but I can't tell anyone else it's wrong" philosophy. Either we can accept that there is a definitive right and wrong, or we can continue to fall farther into chaos and hatred - even hatred for a president.

I do. So do lots of other folks. I belong to an organization called Character Counts Coalition. We have a lot of programs going in our local schools and our local business community. I don't think many national politicians (democrat or republican) care much about anything but their own parties and political careers.
