I wrote a check to Target for my credit card payment. The check was retured and my bank charged me $35. I called Target today and told them I had a returned check and wanted to make good on it. The guy said all I had to do what make a payment by phone. I asked was there a return check fee and he said, "NO". So I made a payment over the phone and he said the other check would be voided. Is this true? I thought they would re-deposit it or even send it to collections. Should I call and ask someone else?

Quit writing hot check? Maybe you should answer the question and not judge me when you don't know the whole story.

Okay, you people are not answering my question. I don't need advice on hot not to bounce a check. I thought I had overdraft protection. My bank charges me for it yet they returned this check and won't help me.

Different banks have different policies. Some charge for bounced checks. I know of one that intentionally processes withdraws first and deposits second each day, hoping that your withdraws will bounce and you pay more fees (one for each check - could be a lot if you write 4 checks and deposit your paycheck). Some banks don't charge a fee. Some offer overdraft protection if you pay a monthly service charge.
In terms of Target not trying to re-cash your check, I think Target is an honest company and they won't try to cash it again if you made the payment over the phone. You probably spoke to the manager of the store, and after he confirmed the phone payment went through he probably ripped the check up himself - checks get deposited at local banks, and not sent into a huge national collections center or anything. And the manager is probably an honest guy - he doesn't want to get in trouble with corporate by screwing over a customer!! But I'd still check the account at the end of the month and make sure it wasn't cashed!!

There are a few but rarely will you find them...
When companies get a returned check it does not mean that the bank deposited them, it means that the bank looked and saw that the check was not going to be sufficient so instead of forcing it through they simply hand it back without charging anyone. The companies from there have a choice to charge you for the inconvenience and potential lost profit from the sale....

Well, the check will be voided but the charge for the bounced check is like your punishment for not making good on your check. They don't return that because you're the one that messed it up, but, they would return the check and not count the

If that's true, keep shopping there. I've has about three checks returned in my life and paid thru the nose for everyone. I even had fees charged to debit accounts because of a supposed balance below their recently changed minimum amount.

There are some banks, credit union, etc who offer overdraft protection. You will pay a fee to the institution but they will cover your check to a certain amount.
