How do you recognize the difference between a male goldfish and a female one?

As goldfish mature, the males will develop small white tubercules on their gill covers, the females do not get them.

i once had two goldfish. a female and a male. the way i could tell thm apart was that the female goldfish was bigger then the male.

really the only way to find that out is to have a vet check the fish by probing it.
