Chain smoking is simply smoking one cigarete after another, often lighting the next smoke from the dying embers of the last. It is for hard core smokers, like those who smoke several packs a day (Yul Brenner apparently smoked 6 packs a day while performing on broadway - he MUST have been a chain smoker).
