Hi, There are a lot of great answers here! Let me tell you about chemicals! I also hate them and use beneficial insects in my work to keep 5 Garden centers clean of harmful insects.
BUT, occasionally, a pesticide is necessary. Wasps are actually more dangerous than most chemicals. The chemicals people use are able to break down in sunlight, so that 24 hours at most after application the chemicals are no longer harmful to humans.
Wasps don't break down after 24 hours, in this case I would weigh all the matters very carefully before choosing to go with out help from a pesticide!

In my county, the agriculture department does abatement. They will kill wasp nests that are in the ground. Yes, they do use a chemical, but it goes into the ground and can't hurt anyone (it dissipates quickly). If they are above ground, the only way I know is to use a commercial spray. Keep you kids in doors for a day or so and it should not be a problem.

By no chemicals I assume you meant pesticides. I have heard of a CO2 fire extinguisher being used to freeze them- but it HAS to be CO2 and it HAS to be done at night, when they have all retreated to the nest. Is it a small nest? For anything larger than a baseball I would call City Hall or your County agency and ask them if they have an abatement program. This would be safer, of course, than the aforementioned procedure. In my opinion, buying a spray specifically for hornets and wasps would be the safest and sanest way to go.

There is an excellent spray that you use on their nest. It effectively concretes up the nest so that it can no longer be used.
But if they are large nests, you really should get in professionals. Try your local council or equivalent to see what they have got on offer. Sometimes they will remove certain pests (wasps) for free.
