It depends on what you want.
Is being with the man you love more important than showing off in a special car, big dress you'll wear once, food and wine for aunts you've never seen and will never see again...??
My cousin just got married this weekend. Bride and Groom only invited their parents, brothers and sisters for the ceremony and for the dinner (lot cheaper). Then, they are planning to do a big informal party for everybody. Instead of spending thousands and thousands for 1 day, they'll put the money down on a mortgage.
Another friend got married in Tulum, Mexico. The wedding and at the same time, their honeymoon! They saved up lots of money!
You also can even get away and come back married!! That's what I will do when I find Mr.Right!!

First of all spending alot of money on a Wedding is stupid. That money would do more good for things a new Married couple would need and could also put some a way toward a house later on. Where they get the money for such extravagance I don't know. But I bet some are still paying it off. Crazy I think. nice small Wedding and a few close friends and Family would be the best of Weddings. That Is what I had almost 39 yrs ago. And it is a Good memory. Not all the hassle a big formal wedding has.

I've paid for both of my weddings. The first was a traditional church wedding when I was young. For that one we kept costs low by using local vendors and keeping things simple. I think we managed to escape with costs under $3,000. For my second wedding we got married in the mountains. The only cost was for the person who married us and a dinner for the few people we had come to the wedding. So in that case we got married for under $300. The key is to do some thing that will make you happy but not force you into debt for the next 10 years. It may be that you decide to keep it simple and then in 5 years when you are better off financially have a big wedding. I think as long as you do things yourself, stick to the fact that ultimately people really can't tell the difference between a $300 dress and a $3,000 dress, and keep it simple you will find you really don't have to spend a fortune. Remember, the big cake, the band, the free liquor, that is all for other people...ultimately a wedding is about two people promising to love each other forever and everything else is just for show.

ABSOLUTELY NOT...I know I certainly didn't!
When my and my hubby decided to get married, there wasn't even any talk of a big wedding, because we both knew that it would be too expensive. A big wedding is great and all, but not everyone has that kinda change in the bank...especially young couples, just starting out without daddy's credit card!
Me and my hubby did a VERY simple ceremony at the Justice of the Peace. A lot of people don't know it, but you can still dress nice and invite a few family members and close friends to be witnesses. It won't be glamorous like an extravagant wedding, but it will be meaningful to you and those close to you. (& save HELLA' BUCKS!)
I still wanted to invite the family over and celebrate my marriage, so we decided to take a few hundred bucks and have a reception (PARTY!!!) We made our food, decorated everything ourselves, and bought a few cases of beer) We sent out invitations that I personally made for everyone. On the invites we made sure to tell everyone that is was pretty much B.Y.O.B. (bring your own booze!!) A friend of the family made our wedding cake and let me tell you...it was better than ANY bakery bought cake!! SO BEAUTIFUL!
We even had a bit of a get away for our honeymoon. Again, it wasn't thousands of dollars worth of beach fronts and umbrella cocktails, but we still had a GREAT time.
I am still getting compliments on how great our reception was because it was in a relaxed enviroment with only the people we wanted there and also because it was creative...
You can have a WONDERFUL & MEMORABLE day on a small paycheck...You just have to be creative and willing!
Congrats on the engagement!

I LOVE this kind of stuff!!

You don't have to spend that much on a wedding. You can make your own dress if you know how to sew or you can buy one used. New ones you can even get from David's Bridal when they have their $99 sale. It usually doesn't cost that much to pay the minister and for the church. That's really all you need. Usually the cost comes with all the unnecessary details included in the reception, the band, the food, the drinks, the decorations, etc. If you don't want to spend that much, just have the wedding and maybe invite people back to your house or some friend's house that is larger to visit with you.
I went to a very beautiful wedding that was in the Catholic Church and after they rented a little hall, had nothing too special and the family members all brought food (potluck) and everything was quite nice. They only had to buy the cake and some flowers besides the clothes.

I just got married last year and my wedding cost about $2000 and that included the dress. My dress, shoes and veil were about $750, from David's Bridal. My cake was $125 (best cake ever, from a gourmet bakery). The spot with the minister was around $400 on the lake(included license). However my husband bought his suit for about $300. plus shoes, you could rent a tux for less. Dinner was about $200 - $300. I had 10 people at my wedding including my husband and I. We married in Lake Tahoe. It was perfect. It was a romantic, perfect day. I would of like to done more, but we want a house more. The cost of the wedding all depends on how many people you have. If you want a big party or reception, have one later and just have an intimate wedding. Party later when you have more cash. I know alot of people who did that. I made my own wedding favors, which turned out awesome. You can do it if you put thought and research into it. Just remember the more people you have at your wedding the more costly it will be. Have the reception later and invite evryone you know. The gifts and the cash could pay off your wedding. Good luck, if you have questions, let me know.

You just have to be creative. You can create and print your own wedding invitations and you can use clear address labels instead of hiring a calligrapher. You can rent a dress or have someone who can sew make your dress for much less than buying one new. You can simplify the flowers. A "Wedding Bouquet" costs a ton, but you can purchase flowers and make your own hand-tied bouquet for a fraction of the cost (see Martha Stewart). There are places where you can hold the ceremony for little or no cost. You just have to do some research. There's a free wedding chapel near Austin that is free for wedding ceremonies and a reception hall nearby that is reasonable.
The biggest cost isn't the wedding it's the reception. You can enlist friends to help with the food and not serve alcohol. For the cake you can find a small bakery and get a simple 2 layer white cake and add flowers to it yourself. You can also purchase a sheet cake to serve to guests which would cut your costs tremendously.
Like I said, you just have to be a little creative and think outside the norm.

Some people actually take out loans to pay for their wedding. Sounds ridiculous to me... my friend just went to a wedding that was well over 200,000 dollars. The bride was only 20. I don't even know! I would never.
Your wedding is supposed to be a special occasion between you and your husband.. who cares how much money you spend or what you eat at the reception.. or if you even HAVE a reception. I want to get married on a beach somewhere.. just my husband and I and the pastor or justice of the peace or whatever. Its not about how much money you can spend, or how many people you can invite.. its about what you're promising to your husband. Make it special.. special doesn't mean expensive.
Congratulations and good luck in your future together!

#1 If you can't afford it, then why get married? Just wait.
#2 If you can't wait, then find a nice little wedding chapel somewhere. Ask all your friends and family to pitch in with food or whatever instead of giving you guys gifts. You could even have it outdoors. It can all be done very cheaply.
I've had a medium sized wedding, a big wedding, and gone to the courthouse. The courthouse was the best and will undoubtedly last the longest. It already has!

People do all sorts of things.
True stories (all family):
-Huge wedding all aunts uncles paid for it is was a huge event, bout 20 grand, ended in divorce.
-Large wedding 22,000 almost cancelled too much stress, couple in debt.
-Enormous wedding, some help from family 20 plus grand, couple paid in for wedding in course of 5 years.
The list goes on… most of my cousins and friends have had 20 plus grand weddings. I have been very close to the bride in the days leading up to the wedding. Some wedding were almost cancelled because of the stress of planning and paying for wedding.
I would love to have a huge wedding, but I like you and a recent college grad and in a huge amount of college debt and struggling to make ends meet. A large wedding is not possible.
If you are truly in love and you both agree, have a small wedding either in Vegas, your backyard, or where ever... take nice pictures. Work toward a happy stable life together and life happily ever after…
Take care and good luck.
