Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island = New England
Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey = Northeastern US
Sometimes the Atlantic States are included in this, if you're dividing the country into 6 (West Coast, Mountain, Midwest, North, South, Alaska & Hawaii), which would be: Maryland and Delaware

The Northeast is defined by those states north of the Mason-Dixon Line and have parts, or are entirely east, of the Appalachian Mountains. The Mason-Dixon Line is the southern borders of Pennsylvania and Delaware.
So they would include Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
This is different from the New England states, which are only the states that are east and northeast of (but not including) New York state. New York state was originally owned by the Netherlands, and is not considered a New England state.
The New England states are Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are the six New England states. Mid-Atlantic states are New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and usually Maryland. These two regions constitute the Northeastern US, in general.

The original Americans colonised the continent by crossing over the Atlantic bridge. Think ice road truckers, but with a permanent connection between American and Russia. The first Americans would have come From Northern Russia, although Chinese genes have been found in American Indians. It is possible that Russian, Mongolian and Chinese crossed over the land bridge. After the end of ice bridge, it gets a bit tricky. However, the contenders are: Norse (Settled islands on the North East coast.) There may have been an expedition by medieval lords, since a carving found in Newfoundland appears to depict a knight in chain mail from the first millenium. Depictions of Coetzocoatal depict a bearded man (The locals didn't have beards). His companions, usually carved as large stone heads in Myan period, show destinct African Negriod features, sugesting early visitors. Welsh. A welsh prince (Maddoc I think) may have colonised one area on the East coast. I believe that settlers discovered a Welsh speaking tribe. And then there are the Spanish, French and British. Note: The Pilgrim fathers were not the first settlement, but the more politically digestible. The actual first colony was a bit of a shambles and had a royal warant to search for gold. So take your pick. As for slavery. Most probably are descended from slaves, yes. Luck
