Gary Sheffield is still a fine outfielder, and a serious threat at the plate. I have a hard time picking a better better player TO KEEP OFF OF THE TRADE LIST, TOO.
A player for almost 20 years, but can still contribute? Steinbrenner just wanted to keep him in his pocket.

Why they didnt trade him b/c In this season in the 30 games he played he had 4 HR, 5 SB, had 19 RBI, and was batting .309 and he is coming in August health and strong to start at 1 st base .

yeah that's a good question.
I think they could have gotten some good pitching prospect for him in return.
The deal with the Phillies was so close to the trade deadline it didn't give the yanks enough time to shop Sheffield around.

I guarantee he won't be in pin-stripes next year.

I was surprised that the Tigers didn't get Soriano. That guy is a great ball player and they had the pitching to get him. I am also surprised that the Phillies didn't trade Lieber and Burrell.

As to Shef, he has a huge contract and he is hurt. Would you give up something to get that?

Sheffield is hurt...The White Sox. Need relievers. The rumor about Soriano was puzzling because they no place to put him.

Who would take him? Nobody wants an old, overpaid, injured DH.
