Why do guys worry so much about proving themselves as men to other men, rather then proving themselves to the creature that makes them male, the female? Even in the animal kingdom the male will try to conquer the other males to prove to the female that he is the best, so why do men try to impress other men, instead of women?

Being a guy I can tell you I used to be like that, its something instinctive I dont even understand it. Most of the time like you said in the wild the most dominant male will get the female and if you look at alot of mens behavior today it hasnt changed and in a way some females have almost conformed to this not really helping the cause any. Some people will say its testosterone but its not, its in the genes, guys do this because they believe they need to, too survive. What nobody takes the time to do is sit back and actually know that no matter what you do and how hard you try theres always someone better than you.

Impressing other men is a form of conquering. Look at the peacocks—two males show off their tailfeathers, and the one with the biggest and prettiest tailfeathers gets the chick. Conquering can be by physical battle or by impressing. Even in the animal kingdom, male #1 would rather have male #2 simply acknowledge male #1's superiority rather than fight male #2 to prove it.

As a side note, -I- enjoy impressing other men simply because it gives me extreme pleasure to be able to best them despite the fact that I'm a pansy little queer and they're manly, stinky, straight guys.

Weeeeeeeel, there are some men that need the confidence boost they can get by "showing up" the other guys, but essentially it all does come down to flexing their muscles to look better to the female of the species. After all, some big tough guy trying to impress a young lady by armwrestling her isn't going to impress her that much.

Me, I'm overloaded with confidence so I have no problem challenging the ladies at the bar to a friendly armwrestling match... and I usually win too!

Why do women get all dressed to the nines for other women? Most guys really don't notice the wrapping as much as you'd think.

Basically it is competition across the board. Not right or wrong - but those few that go overboard could probably use a check up from the neck up to see what is driving them.

It's instinct. As you mentioned the animal world, the alpha male asserts his dominance over other men as a method of luring females--because he becomes the "best" of the group by doing so. It comes from the thought that fertility = superiority.

Men impress women by showing that they are the best. THat is why we "one up" one another. We do it to prove to society that we are the alpha male.
And if we are pointing fingers, why do women always like the a**holes who always have to put others down. We are just responding to women.

It's so simple..........it's because most women go for this kind of guy!! Although I see this kind of stuff and think "what a bully", I do know women who think these guys are tough. Find a nice guy who has no need of such posturing and you have a friend for life.

So maybe if women got smarter and didn't approve of this BULLY mentality the guys would stop. Until then..........remember ladies........... If you take on a guy like this be prepared for him to "show his tough guy" side on you at some point.

life is life..this is what men do..all male spiecies..but i do agree with you that they should come down a level or 2..and try not being something they are not. because ive noticed in my past some men who try to do this it actualy doesnt suit them trying and it makes them look like idiots..but some men can pull it off and it suits them..i think this is a question we will never be able to conquere or change..even bush and blair are fine samples and it doesnt suit the both..haaaaaa

If all the other men are dominated, then he doesn't have to impress the women. None of the men will move in on him if they're scared or intimidated.... and its FUN being a man

Im not sure why men do this. I am a man, and i've never done this. I'm not gay, either.. I am more of a man then most men. I have always been about pleasing and wooing girls, and I think the men that act like you described arew un-evolved and childish.
