If the @ symbol on your keyboard is the "2" shifted, then you have an American Keyboard and Windows thinks you are using an English one.
Otherwise if the @ symbol shares the apostrophe key the it is the other way round.
Either way go into the Control Panel and it should be possible to select the correct form of keyboard in there.

My laptop is like that!! Even though the keyboard is set up to British. I have got used to using the keys in the wrong order now, but still havent worked out which key will give me a 'hash' cos at the moment I press the 'hash' and get a 'backslash'. But the backslash also gives me a backslash. Confused now??!!!
Grrrrrr. How annoying is it? My lappy is an Acer by the way.

You have the settings of your keyboard set to USA, try shift+2 that will get an @ sign. Mine was the same so I bought a new keyboard before I found out what caused it.

common problem - as before set for the wrong area - do this
goto the control panel - click on the regional and lang settings - looks like a globe
select the region that you want then click on advanced - ensure there is a tick in the very bottom box that apples it to every user
now goto the languages tab - select the region that you want - then click on the add button
in the little box if you have another region in there as well - select it then click on the remove button
now click apply and then ok - then restart - that should sort that out for you
hope this helps

it's because you're keyboard is set to the wrong country settings, if you're from America, it's set to UK, and vice-versa. I'm sure you change it in the control Panel but I can't findit, I hope my answer was helpful enough though.
I had that same problem a while back, and after a bit, you get used to it.

You think you've got problems!
I'm still looking for that "any" key. Where the hell is it, I keep getting told to press it but there isn't one on my keyboard.
