That would depend on if he has contact with his dad and this new sibling. If not I would leave it alone and let the dad tell him when he decides to be around. If he is around, despite the distance, the you should either tell him or have daddy tell him. Nothing sucks worse than becoming a sibling and didnt know it was going to happen. Trust me, I was on that side of the fence.

At five he is old enough to be told that his dad is having another son. Just be sure to tell him in a manner that makes him feel secure that his dad is still his dad and that he is still as important to his dad as he was before. He may not fully understand everything involved but he will definitely understand enough that you need to tell him now.

sooner is always better. Is he going to be involved with the new brother or sister? Does your son see his father?
Just let him know that he is going to have a new brother/sister. Dont even bring up the subject of "half-brother" or "half-sister". Kids dont get that kind of thing anyway.
My son was 5 and my 1st daughter was 4 when I had their sister. They were excited from the get go.

How about now? 5 years old is pretty oblivious. My 5 year old could care less of my divorce.
