Average for smiling is 1-3 months (see sources section below), so he isn't even late for a full-term baby.

From the reading I've done, if a child is born premature, he will hit his marks at the time that he should have if he were born "on time"; i.e., if a baby who is born at term on January 1 is supposed to sit up on April 1, then your son, also being born on January 1, but should have been born on February 1, will sit up on May 1; four months past his actual due date.

If you had a perfectly normal labor and delivery, and the baby still isn't hitting his normal marks (normal age = five weeks), don't worry, it's probably just a matter of he'll get it when he feels like it.

If you had a protracted labor, with lots of difficulty and complications, meconim staining, etc., even though you had a perfectly normal pregnancy, take baby back to the doc and make him work with you to find out why.

Sometimes during a complicated delivery process the baby can get a lack of oxygen to the brain that causes damage, and that can be a reason for not hitting their marks. Again, if you had a normal delivery, like most moms, then it's probably nothing. But be alert and if you feel uncomfortable or uneasy in any way, take that baby back to the doc's and find out why.

Don't let them pat you on the head and treat you like you don't know anything; follow your gut instinct. It can make all the difference in the world.

Good luck!

Is he gaining weight and eating OK? If so, he's fine. If not, you need to wake him up and feed him.

My son did the same thing, they called it failure to thrive and it's from not having the physical urge to eat from being born early. He'd sleep all the time and hardly ever open his eyes or cry, and he lost over a pound.

I had to stop breastfeeding and start him on canned formula (more calories than powder, per the pediatrician). It's really hard to do, I often sat and cried because he'd fall asleep after only an ounce of formula. I felt terrible having to pinch and poke his feet to wake him up. BUT, he would have died if I hadn't. It took less than a week to see him perk up, but it still took a few more weeks to get an appetite.

If he was 5 weeks early then he is mentally and physically a 4 week old right now. Every child develops on their own time, but it sounds to me like hes doing everything he should be doing.

Being born early it will take a little bit longer to make the milestones. On average doctors say that for every week early a baby is born it will take that much time to catch up. By the age of three he shoud be catch up to his peers.

It's perfectly OK, remember that he is 5 weeks early, so is going to take him a little longer than the average to start doing more things. But, mom knows best, if you think there is something wrong, consult the pediatrician.

Good luck and God bless!

He sounds normal to me. You need to remember that with most premature babies they develop at a rate from the time they were supposed to be born, not when they are actually born....so you're son should be acting like a 4 week old.

he's fine, let him grow, the most they do at this age is sleep and eat and poo. not much to do at this age they are still coping with being in this world.. Get the book "What to Expect the First Year" this will let you know what you should be expecting month by month. But he will do everything as soon as he is ready. Be thankful he sleeps, in a couple of months you will be wishing he would sleep lol.

If you are concerned then you need to see a pediatrician. If he is 9 weeks old then he should have had his 2 month check up already in which you need to talk to the doctor about.

Seems to be your first baby.
A baby this age only sleeps, drinks and uses his nappies. That's all.
He soon will start smiling, and doing more.
Watch out when he sits up and soon after this he will crawl and walk.
It's great to watch how he is developing. This time will run by faster than you think.
You should have read a book about baby's first year. Get you one!
