Guantanamo bay is a bay on the end of the island of Cuba. It's the site of a U.S. military base, that has been there for years. i think it was put there way back in the 50's, when Cuba was still a friendly country to the U.S. It has been abandoned for a good chunk of the last couple years, though it's cut off and sealed off from the rest of Cuba. As of late, it has been re opened and use as a place to put the 'war on terror' prisoners. They simply want a safe place to hold them, that is not in the U.S.(so anti-war folks can't march outside the prison, for example.).

Guantanamo Bay is a violation of international law, where people are held against thier will for being suspected of having criminal intent and not actually commiting a crime.
It is located outside of the U.S. because if it were within the political boundaries of the U.S. it would be a clear violation of the U.S. Constitution, and would fall under far more public scrutiny than it does now, and may also be subject to public oversight rather than the current military management

Guantanamo is the prison camp the US goverment is using for torturing prisoners of war and mere suspects who are not actually proven to have committed a crime, while preaching to the rest of the world about human rights...It is conveniently situated in Cuba, far from prying eyes and protesters concerned by such blatant breach of international laws, and outside US mainland should it ever become a military target by the so-called terrorist enemies of the US' god-given right (...) to be the world's superpower, dictating it's own rules to all the rest of us, who are seen merely as subjects of the Great American Empire and subordinates of it's wise leadership.

Mike has it right, it is a military base we have had for quite a long time. Held it through the communist revolution of Cuba, and now in addition to that we are housing a number of POW's there.

Why? Same reason I suppose that we have bases in a number of places around the world.

sdo4tnr has it completely wrong. It is not in violation of ANY laws. They people that are imprisoned there are not criminals they are prisoners of war. That status actually grants them more rights then they deserve, but that it the status granted to them.

Outside of prisoner exchanges, it is the normal method of operation for countries to hold POW's until the war is over.

I don't see the war on terror ending anytime soon, and with the lib's sabotaging our countries war efforts at every chance they get it will probably take even longer.

Null_whateer his name is: has it even more wrong, Gitmo has never been abandoned or unused since we got it. It just wasn't in the news.

The United States assumed territorial control over Guantánamo Bay under the 1903 Cuban-American Treaty, which granted the United States a perpetual lease of the area.

Guantanamo Bay is a prison camp that houses the "enemies of the US" captured committing "war crimes" or captured during war times.

Why is it outside of the US? Easy - outside the borders, they don't have to follow the US laws on prison conduct and running. So that means we can do whatever we want to them as long as we follow the Geneva Convention. Torture, torture, torture.

As a UK citizen I am ashamed to admit I do not know how to answer this question. All I know that Guantanamo bay is equivalent to our ' Blackhole of Calcutta'. it's all so very, very wrong.

It is meant to be a Military base but its where they take "terrorists" to torture them, they wouldnt get away with it on American soil so they torture them there! The land was on loan to the USA for 100 years - the 100 year loan has now expired but they are still there!

It is territory the US seized in the Spanish American War. And the troops never came home.So 100 years later we still have troops there.
