I must admit there are times when questions like this particular one gives me pause, or even shock. They are people of the Orient; there is no changing that. There are Asians who are not Orientals. It is important that people understand Asia is a region of the world. The Orient is in that area. In China, the citizens are Chinese. All Chinese are not Oriental.

Orient is a word that means east, occident is the word that means west. If you look at a world map with the longitudinal meridian as the centre, asians are in the east, which is why they were called oriental in the first place, since they originated from the east of the world. I would not think may people use the word oriental in a derogatory fashion, its just an older word.

Because they come from the Orient. the rug wouldn't be called Oriental if it didn't come from the Orient.
