Check out "The Decline of the Roman Empire" by Gibbon.

For Russia the web addresses below give you some info. You could also check out Charlemagne who was perhaps the greatest Medieval King from Germany - link below; or the Hapsburgs who were the Holy Roman emporers up until the end of the 1st World War. See link below. The Hapsburg's were Swiss and provided the Body guard for the Pope - which is the same today.

For Russian history - Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Ivan the Terrible are all fascinating subjects. The first two because they had a big impact on Russian culture and the last for being such a warped, probably psychotic, being.

I found Elizabeth of Bohemia (the Winter Queen) a really interesting subject. She was the daughter of James I, married a German Elector, became Queen of Bohemia for a year, produced 13 children, ended up in exile for 40 years, returned to England at the Restoration in 1660. Her offspring were equally interesting, including Sophia, Electress of Hanover who was mother to George I and nearly ascended the throne herself; and Prince Rupert - soldier, admiral, inventor, politician, amongst other things.

For authors, it depends upon the style you like, I'd suggest looking up subjects you like in Amazon and reading the reviews. I've read the ones below and found them enjoyable and informative.

Check out a book by Michael Grant, 'The Twelve Caesars.' It provides a brief history of each of the first 12 Roman emperors, starting with Julius. Some of them were pretty fascinating men; Augustus gets my vote, but Hadrian is a close second.

It's a pretty good read, the chapters on each of the 12 are brief but informative, and if you find a Caesar you like it gives you plenty of material to research.

Don't confuse it with works having the same title by Suetonius or Graves. They are about the same men, but can be difficult to get through.

The last empress of China, Tzu Hsi, is a fascinating subject. She died in 1908 after ruling China aas absolute monarch for 47 years. An interesting book about her is "Dragon Lady: The Life and Legend of the Last Empress of China" by Sterling Seagrave. At the time she was represented as a depraved and merciless tyrant who paved the way for the ruin of her country, but Seagrave redresses the balance by looking at new sources.
