I had always wondered why the population is so great. I even thought it was strange. Here is why; I read on the internet that most Chinese are Taoist Buddhists. Buddhism has no central deity whom commands that they have children. Furthermore Buddhism has no rule stating that you must have children (unlike the Christian bible).
When I got to China I discovered that most people that live in Shenzhen are not religious or spiritual at all (I only ever saw one Church during my month tenure). So if they have no deity, and no ‘rule book’ that orders them to have children, why have they been so diligent to have them?
I thought maybe they had so many children because perhaps they were very pernicious, like in the USA. From what I saw they are very much like us, if not more so, in that regard. They are quite proud of ‘hickeys’ also. But when I asked my translator, she said that unplanned pregnancy is very rare. I assume they are more careful because they don’t have all the &%(#@ welfare like we do in the America.
Most of my Chinese colleagues are in their late 20’s and have no kids. My translator was shocked to hear that most women in the USA have two kids by 25.
Sorry, I guess I just posted more questions!

The mountains sourronding China inhibited them from moving from that area and it also prevented other people from coming in. With that being said plauge and disease were harder to come due to China's mountains acting a barrier from the outside world and all it's pros and cons. They were also in a large area that had high amounts of fertile land. The Government also expected the women to bear children in order to support the farms and the growing threat of foreigners finding new ways of coming within China.

China was a poor, agricultural society until only recently. The best insurance against being poor when you're an old farmer is to have lots of children to support you. Kind of like a social security system.
Also, they had a relatively stable society, which helps.

I don't think it really is... It's just that they all want to be in the few cities that they have.
China has endless open space if they could just get the sardines out of the can.
