If a woman goes to the doctor and is pregnant and she continues to smoke and by testing her blood for nicotine she is still smoking that they would lock the women in a treatment center until after the baby is born so the child doesnt have to live with its moms horrible choice? I think when your pregnant your body isnt just yours anymore and its wrong to hurt a child like that...they have no choice.

Anyone that says"i smoked and my kids were fine" are clueless, smoking during pregnancy has life long effects on a child not just birth weight. My best friends mom smoked while preg. and my friend was healthy until 11 years old when she developed chronic bronchitis and hacks constantly and has to spit up huge chunks of phlem,it will never go away and it was directly caused by her mother sucking down cigs b/c her mom always smoked outside as to not have it around her.She is 30 years old and still pays for moms mistakes.Yes its a free world but do the babies get to vote on toxins being pumped into them? No....i think if i was a smoking mom and i couldnt stop i would go into treatment in a second out of pure love for my childs health.quitting is hard but does the fact that its hard give you the right to say "o well i tried" Put your butt someplace that can get you some help and yes that includes drinkers and druggies and if you really have to smoke use birth control and dont get pregnant

Really? So you're going to do this to all drug-addicted mothers, all those who have gestational diabetes that have Large for Gestational Age babies, and all those who have genetic defects that could possibly cause problems, right? Not to mention the teen mothers who are too irresponsible to get prenatal care even when it's free, and those who are homeless and have no way to pay for prenatal care? What about those who have to take medications for medical conditions like seizures that are potentially harmful for their fetus? Are you going to lock them up, too, so the baby doesn't have to deal with the consequences? What about the women who choose to stay with abusive boyfriends and spouses because they don't think they have anywhere to go? Everyone makes bad choices. Smoking is an addiction. It's not any different from crack. What about the alcoholic mothers? You going to lock them up, too? What about the abusive fathers, or the addict fathers who pimp out their pregnant women? What about the fathers with addictions that damaged the sperm and caused a genetic defect in the fetus? These women need our support, not our condemnation. Grow up.

I quit smoking the second I found out I was pregnant, but I agree with Julia L. This is still a free country, and you don't have to like what people do, you don't even have to PRETEND to like what people do, but you can't stand there and act like you've never done dumb or said stupid in your life because you have by the mere fact that you're human.
I understand where you're coming from, I really do. I get just as irritated when I see a pregant mom smoking as I do kids jumping around without a car seat, just like I see moms allowing their toddlers and children to wander 15, 20 feet behind them at the mall, just sort of assuming that everything will be all right.
See, there are far worse things that parents have done to their children than smoking. I think the very worst parent is the parent who refuses to put limitations, expecations and guidelines on their children. That is a far bigger parenting crisis in the country than mommies who smoke when they're pregnant.
Become an advocate that helps these women quit for the health of their babes, and themselves, and direct that rage somewhere useful.
I feel ya!

I know mothers who smoked and their babies came out fine. As a matter of fact they were not premature, had a high birth weight and after the baby was born they NEVER smoked around the baby. Actually the parents have never smoked in their house and don't allow anyone to smoke near their child.

i have 2 healthy kids, i'm a smoker, but stopped as soon as i could . probably about 2-1/2 - 3 months pregnant. i slowed down on smoking then quit entirely, until after birth. I don't smoke in my house. You better talk about people who do far worst things when their pregnant and don't even try to quit. what about abortions? you don't think that's hurting the baby? what should be a law is that anybody who gets and abortion, should be made to get their tubes tied.

I love the idea of protecting those who can't speak up - but what about after the child is born? It is still in danger of second hand smoke. I have severe allergies which lead to asthma attacks when I am around smoke. I believe it was because my mother always smoked around us. I don't know what can be done about that. I think she was a wonderful mother, but I believe that her inability to give up the cancer sticks caused (at least in part) my asthma.

NO that shouldnt be a law! I dont smoke...nor do I put up with it in my house, I just read an article in Fit Pregnancy about smoking moms. What they need is some support and extreme guidance. I dont think "some" of those moms intend to keep smoking, they just cant help it, so help them...not jail them

i agree with the fact that its not fair to harm your child like that, they dont have a choice and if you want to harm yourself thats fine but the child doesnt deserve it. They cant get away from it. Thats why i quit smoking as soon as i found out i was pregnant.
