It is said that the name "missionary position" arose because this sex position was supposed to have been taught by Christian missionaries as the only "proper" sex position. The term is believed to have originated sometime between 1945 and 1965. Another possible explanation is that the term was coined by indigenous people when they first saw missionaries having sex in this position, unusual amongst them.

The missionaries of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century did not approve of sex for anything other than procreation. Therefore, novelty was not to be tolerated, which meant the man on top position was the only approved method of procreation. Anything else was said to be sinful.

That's the legend, at least. It may not be true. The earliest citation for "missionary position" in the Oxford English Dictionary is from 1969, and the Random House unabridged says the term first showed up circa 1965-70. In other words, it may have been invented by 60s hipsters who looked down upon the uncool Presbyterian proselytizers of an earlier age.

Missionary. The missionary position was taught by Christian missionaries to ''Third World Natives'', in many different places, particularly African countries. African people traditionally preferred to have sex in a variety of positions, which Victorian English Christians thought was ''uncivilized''. I hope that someone else will give a better reason than I, because now I think about it I have no idea where they got this idea from. What makes a man lieing on top of a woman any more genteel or sophisticated than a woman sitting on a man, or a man kneeling behind a woman, or any of a variety of different positions. Making love is making love and it shouldn't really matter how one does it, should it.

I'm not making this up. It is called the Missionary position, because Baptist Missionary's in foreign land's had sex in this position, and when the natives saw this, the started to have sex this way, because the missionary's said that doing it any other way was sinful.

During missions to spread Christianity many of the white men had sex with the natives in the man on top position. This was odd to the natives who used woman on top or rear entry positions. Thus, man on top was named missionary after the missionaries.

It is the least sinfull position in which to procreate- a very important ideal for a devout religious person. So that's the only way missionaries do it... lol- I think, but I'm just talking out my a s s!

Cuz the natives somewhere noticed that the missionaries only did it in the same boring way everytime. Face to face, man on top, every time. Seems strange to me too.

When the natives spied on the missionaries having sex they were amazed that they weren't doing it doggie style- ergo the term missionary position.

It was called so by the African natives who saw the white missionaries do it and they thought that this was their way of making love while they would do it in other fashion.

Because missionary is pretty much synonomous with standard, and that is the standard position.
