The DoubleTree at the Entrance to Universal is the best! It is right across the street, walking distance to Universal. You can purchase your tickets there at the hotel. They do have a shuttle, but it is just as easy to walk! You can find some good deals online.

There are other hotels in close proximity (Holiday Inn, Best Western, Wingate Inn, Hamptom Inn, Homewood Suites, Hilton Garden Inn), depends on what you want to spend.

My wife and I stayed at the Universal Amerisuites and were very pleased. It is a somewhat older hotel with a few maintenance problems, but offers suites with 2 queen beds, a sofa bed, refigerator, microwave, free wireless internet in the room, full breakfast, and a shuttle to Universal. The elevators are a little slow and the outdoor pool is small, but this place provides a very good value for the money. We also considered the nearby Universal Best Western and Comfort Suites.

Everyone I have ever booked outside the theme park has been very pleased with the hotels. These hotels are competing with the theme park and therefore, have very reasonable prices as well as great service and nice lodging. Many have shuttles to the parks at no charge. It is hard to recommend one hotel. It really depends on what you are looking for and your needs. If you need assistance, I will be glad to talk with you. Feel free to email me.

In 2004, my sister and I stayed at Liki Tike Resorts. It is a timeshare, with condos. It also has it's own small waterpark, which the kids loved. You might be able to get a good rate by telling them you are interested in buying, (but you don't really have to buy). Tell them you are interested and ask if you could rent on a trial basis.
