Well, there are 2 possibilities of test. Bronchoscopy or gastroscopy (or EGD which means esophagogastroduodenoscopy).

- Bronchoscopy: done when there's suspicion that the blood is coming from the lungs or respiratory tract.
- Gastroscopy: when the doctor thinks the blood may be coming from the gastrointestinal tract.

In both cases you will receive sedation and although you will be slightly awake during the procedure (otherwise there's no way you can help the doctor swallowing the tube with the camera they are going to put inside you), YOU WON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING!, so don't panic!

Basically, both procedures are very similar, with the only difference that the bronchoscopy looks at the respiratory tract and the gastroscopy (also called endoscopy) looks at the stomach and intestines from the inside. What they want to know is where the blood is coming from.

You will first be given sedatives, then they are going to introduce a tube around 1/3-1/2 an inch in diameter with a camera on the tip and take a look inside your respiratory or GI tract. If there is any lesion or ulcer that is actively bleeding they may cauterize it. Another thing doctors almost always do is taking a biopsy, which is taking a small "bite" of tissue inside to look under the microscope. This won't hurt at all.

In summary, don't worry, it's a very safe procedure and you won't even noticed you had it done when you wake up, you won't remember anything, and it's not painful.

After the procedure, you may feel a little bit drowsy for some hours due to the sedatives, but with the current medications, this only lasts very shortly. Occasionaly you may also feel a little discomfort for 1-2 days after the procedure (because of the tube placed inside).

Its called an EGD. Not scary at all. You'll be put under light sedation and when you wake up you'll wont remember a thing. They insert a tube with a light and a camera on the end that travels through your esophagus and into your stomach. They are basically going to check and make sure you dont have an ulcers in there anywhere that would explain the bleeding. It'll be 30 minutes tops and then you'll be free! Don't worry, relax and take it easy. They more you worry, the worse you'll make it for yourself. It'll be a piece of cake!

it's an endocsopy a small tube with a light and camera in it that goes in usually through the nose - usually with a mild sedative given in advance

Does not hurt but a little uncomfortable as it goes down that is all - most people do not remember much because of the sedative

don't worry and please do go as a little discomfort now may reassure you in the long run that you do not have anything more serious

The test is called an endoscopy and they will make you groggy and you shouldn't feel a thing. They stick a tube down your throat and they can see into your stomach and view other organs. Shouldn't be painful and is probably nothing. You can look it up on the internet and they'll tell you exactly what to expect.

endoscopy, they use a special tube that they can control with a light on the end so they can see everything. It is not scary just slightly annoying. Have Fun.

if it is a camera and they are going to explore into your stomach it is called an upperendoscopy.
