This has been the study of some interesting medical papers over the years. The short answer is that he died of asphyxiation as his lungs filled up with fluid. From the website listed below, "The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia." This site lists several references from comntemporary writers referring to Jesus. Some of Josephus' comments may have been later emendations, but perhaps not all.
The Assyrians were highly practiced in the art of torture. They passed this on to the Babylonians who had an entire library, it is said, devoted to how to torture a man without killing him.
The Romans merely perfected several methods, of which the cross was a favorite. The intention was to humiliate and inflict the maximum amount of pain before the subject died. Each stage was designed very scientifically, such as the barbs that pulled the skin off his back along the grain of the muscles.

His death was first of all sacrificial. But I assume you are inquiring of the cause or causes of death? Well, He could have died of circulatory shock, from the scourging He received at the hands of the Romans. The Romans scourge was a whip with pieces of metal or bone fragments at the end of the each tail. The Romans had no law that limited the number of whips a man could receive, it was mostly determined by their mood. The scourging would cause deep bruising at first, but if continued would open the body to the bones. Very few people would survive such a scourging. The other way Jesus would've died was by exposure to the elements or even thirst, while crucified. The crucifixion produces terrible effects on the body, least of which is exhaustion. The other way was when the Roman soldier ran his spear into Jesus ' side piercing his heart. Because Jesus and the two thieves were crucified on the Passover, the bodies had to be taken down before sunset, so to hasten death, the soldiers would break the legs. With this the victim couldn't raise himself to breathe, and as a result suffocate.
But Jesus was already dead, so His legs weren't broken.

Well it was probably a combination of losing so much blood and being stabbed in the side and then once in position on the cross with his arms out and feet nailed to the cross it hindered his breathing.

Jesus died on the cross when he gave up His spirit. No man was able to kill Him and His death was symbolic on the cross and many think the Roman soldiers left Him on the cross until He died, which is true; but it wasn't until He relinquished His spirit did He provide propitiation to the Father.

This was the common way for execution in those days. Jesus
suffocated. He could only hold himself up on the cross for just so long, his strength finally gave way. He was also speared but this didn't cause his death.
May God Bless Jesus for his pain and suffering to wash away sins of mankind.

The weight of the body puts pressure on the lungs, causing you to suffocate. And the spear in the side? People make that soldier out to be a bad guy, but that was an act of mercy. Bleeding out is a much quicker way to go.

"He" didn't. Sacrifice of the son by the father is from an OLD, OLD, myth, one with many precedents. ( for example, check out Abraham and Isaac in the Bible, but the myth precedes the OT) People need to open their eyes. Do some research and wake up folks!

Do you mean the cause of death? Probably asphyxiation.
I saw a doctor on tv speculating on what may have happened.
Whoever said the lance is wrong. In the 4th gospel water he is already dead when the soldier pierces him.

His hands and feet were nailed to the cross and he hung there hours. This type of death causes the person to eventually suffocate to death. A very horrible and painful death.
