depends on the temperature of the ice. the colder, thus harder, ice stacks much better once you get the hang of it but for beginners soft ice is better

You need to control speed. I learned on a hard fast indoor ice that was machine groomed. I think you need to practice, practice, practice. It is truly a sport that anyone has the ability to attempt but few can master.
