Wait for Sunday's sale at Circuit City or Best Buy and buy the RAM. Open the slot in the bottom of the PC with your Phillips screwdriver. Insert RAM chip carefully (with battery out and power unplugged.)
Below is a step by step.

you will need to visit the HP website since compaq was aquired by HP. You will need the model number and serial number of your laptop, depending on what the specs are you may need to remove your existing RAM and replace both sticks with newer higher capacity, remember cheap memory is not worth the effort. Buy some with lifetime no quibble warranty (Kingston, PNY, OCZ, Crucial) usually the more expensive stuff is better lower latency. Buy the maximum amount your computer will accept and the fastest speed good sources are www.buy.com www.newegg.com or from a local brick and mortar store BUT you will pay more plus pay tax too

RAM is the easiest user-upgrade there is. Just open up the slot in the bottom of your laptop . .
no sctrach that. Even easier just take your whole laptop to your local best buy, compUSA or whatever and ask the salesman which type of RAM you need. don't be embarrased hardly anyone ever knows. When he takes the RAM out to see what type it is, you'll see where it goes! Ask questions of him or her and you'll have no problem.

It is as easy as:
1) find the EXACT type of memory you need
2) purchase the memory
3) open the access panel on back of your laptop
4) place the new memory
Of course, it assumes you know you have an extra slot. If not, you have to remove what is already in there and replace it with larger one.
I strongly DISCOURAGE from purchasing cheap memory. Memory failures are usually very intermittent and hard to track down.

Your laptop isn't necessarily upgradable. Laptops have limited space inside and generally don't have several bays for memory. The one thing that I would advise is to make sure that the new RAM is compatible with your machine before you buy it.
Compaq is not considered to be a "clone" or IBM-compatible machine and often requires Compaq replacement parts in order to work well.

Find out what the max RAM is for your laptop and also what type. Price out the RAM, and be sure to check places like Fry's, New Egg and Techbargains.com to see what the prices are like.
When it comes to doing your actual switch, watch out for static electriticity build-up or you can screw up your memory or laptop.
I changed mine from 512 to 2 gigs not too long ago, and for multiple apps it's great! Best investment for my laptop to date.

Buy some more. If you want to install, install a lot more. It's worth it.
