Well, according to Stephen Hawking's theory, the universe must have been born out of a singularity some 15 billion years ago. However, this big bang is not an explosion in the conventional sense, with the galaxies hurtling outwards through space like fragments of a burst balloon, more like space is expanding, taking the galaxies along for the ride like 2 spot of paint on the balloon, the spot move apart as the balloon inflate but they don,t leave the balloon!

the big bang is said to have happened about 15 Billion years ago. scientist know this because in 1965 during the tests of the Bell Telephone Laboratories experiment microwave reciever, they accidentaly detected the backround radiation of our unirverse. Backround Radiation is the oldest and farthest part of our universe we can detect is present. it is so old that is happened only 300,000 years after the big bang.

Never happened. T (time)= 0 is a singular point. Mathematical equations fails at that point. So they call it Big Bang. That is nothing but scientists banging their heads trying to explain what happened.
The text book answer will be 13.5 billion years ago

First chapter of Genisis. The big bang started, according to Uncle Albert and his math, from a mass smaller than the proton in the center of an hydrogen atom. Isn't that creation?

A really good article on common misconceptions about the Big Bang is available from Scientific American:

I'm pretty sure it was on the 4th of July... Guy Faulke's Day if you're in the UK, though... Maybe Cinco de Mayo if you're in Mexico... Tough call. Time appears to be very relative that way...
