My sister's job did this to her. They also made a sigh in the break room that told people if they want to cry, wine, or complain, that Walmart is hiring...

Whoa! Have your sister check out this web site: http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/Table_Labor.htm. I hope she gets a terrific job elsewhere really soon!

Yes. it's unfortunate but true. Pretty much everyone is an "employee at will" the employer can do whatever they want, as long as it is legal. The up side is that anyone can leave the job "at will" also. The weight of this arrangement is more favorable to the employers side. If you sister was under contract what they may have done is violate the contract. DO NOT send her to work at Walmart - they are one of the worst employers out there. They have many violations against them.

sorry I took so long to answer this , I had to make a sign for the break room . Look at it this way , if she was an outstanding employee they wouldn't have done that , sometimes it easier to make them quit then fire them . Sounds like they is a lot of worthless workers there , if there were doing a good job revenue would be up , therefore no need to lower the pay . Also the sign is very true , there are thousands of jobs out there that will hire anybody

Yes, the job requirements can change, as long as there is no union or no employment contract in effect that states something different. That is seldom the case. And, she has the right to go somewhere else to work.
She can also stay there and file for unemployment with the reason being "reduction of hours:" (in Kansas you can anyway)

Your sister has a job -- a job is not welfare.

If you hire someone and run out of money are you allowed to cut hours and pay?

ususally not with out warning out of respect to keep employees. if it is a small mom and pop place they can/will/and do do those type of things. your sister could file a complaint check out local state web site for info on employment complaints

and walmart is ALWAYS hiring

Sounds a bit like a now defunct insurance company I used to work for... they sent out a company-wide email telling people they should consider it a privilege to work there.
Yes they can cut someone hours unless a contract has been signed which specifically addresses this.

Yes, they can. As for the walmart thing, tell her to go there; at least that company knows how to treat their employees with the respect they deserve.

YES they can do this. We live in the US where big business or any business rules. YOU as an employee have very few rights. VOTE DEMOCRAT next time.
