patrick k - you need at least as much moral support and forgiveness from God and fellow human beings as Mel Gibson does. Maybe you need more, Mel was drunk when he went on his tirade. I have to assume you were sober at the time of your posting an answer.

What Mel said was bad. One has to wonder whether or not he would said what he said had he not been drunk? I am not making excuses for the man, but his situation is a good example of how sin begets sin.

We must be careful not to scorn too much. It would be great if the Jewish community reaches out and accepts Mel Gibson's offer for help.

I find it a little disturbing that Mel Gibson only decided to reach out for help once the police reports were publicly released, and even more disturbing that well after issuing a public apology for his anti-Semitic statements, he claimed that he never remembered saying them (you'd think he would have mentioned that earlier?).

I feel sorry for Mel Gibson because he got drunk and did some very stupid things, and now his publicists are going frantic trying to salvage his reputation by generating pity for him. Notice that the emphasis is on alcoholism and suicidal impulses rather than demeaning comments and extremely dangerous driving.

Moreso, I feel sorry for poorer people who make racist comments and drive drunk, and can't afford to hire publicists to spin a crime into a tragedy.

And I feel sorriest of all for the people on the road that night, the female officer who Gibson addressed as "sugar ****", and members of the Jewish faith who were also insulted, because now they're expected to go out of their way to be nice to someone who insulted and threatened them.

The Jewish religion advocates forgiveness, not idiocy and masochism.

I was very angry when I read what he had said. It still angers me but I did read his statement and I hope he was completely truthful. We all make mistakes that's part of life and I know that for myself. I have made some really dumb statements. Hey, I had 53 years to get my foot in my mouth. I hope Mel does resolve this situation and I wish him the best not because he is famous but because he is simply a human like the rest of us. I think the people of the Jewish faith will help him.

I really hope that people sober up and realize that Mel Gibson is a shallow, megalomaniac who equates himself with all things uberChristian. He was raised in a very anti-Semitic home and has expounded on these feelings.

He is a brilliant marketer, though. He played up to all the ignorant sheeple and actually had them selling tickets in churches! (Wasn't there something about buying and selling in the temple that really pissed off Jesus?!) The guy made more money on his snuff film of "The Passion" than he did on all of his other films COMBINED! He is just another hypocrite of the christian faith. My money says that the sheeple will immediately forgive him and look past his "transgressions".

I am not Jewish, I am Catholic by birth and Christian in spirit. Will the Lord forgive him? of course. Will the Jews and America forgive him? Who cares. I like Mel's movies, I think he is a fantastic director, but he doesn't pay my bills so what difference does it really make?

Does anyone in America (or the world for that matter) honestly care what Mel Gibson thinks of the Jews, or what the Jews think of him? Honestly, does anyone care!?

I would pray that the Children of Israel can recognize sincere atonement and requests for forgiveness. I believe Mel Gibson is doing exactly what is instructed of him and all of us when we sin. To ask for forgiveness of those we've injured and to make amends.

I admire his obedience to God, and I respect the courage he has to face those who he has injured.

He is being an example of what a repentant sinner is!

Just like when any big celebrity gets busted for something stupid, he'll hang his head in shame for a while, maybe do a public apology, then somebody else'll screw up and his little dwi deal will just blow over.
