Resetting your resolution probably isn't going to fix it as that will always take up the full screen, it just makes everything smaller or bigger. Sounds like you have a couple inches of black space around a smaller screen in the middle of your LCD.
Not saying this is the fix but it kinda sounds like something i've seen before, so here goes.
Look on the Keys of your laptop. You should see some type of Other colored keys, like my Dell there are purple Function keys that make the 10-key pad and so on. Look for the one that Says, CRT/LCD. For instance mines above my F8 key. Then find the key that is a different color, mine is purple and says, FN, and its between the ALT and Windows keys on the bottom left. Hit the colored FN or Function key then hit the Key that has CRT/LCD on it. This will switch the modes your laptop screen runs. It usually used for when you hook your laptop to an external source, but if you don't have an external source plugged into your VGA port on the back it'll switch your laptop monitor.
Good Luck

Right click on the desktop, and select properties.
Click on the settings tab and check the resolution - should probably be at about 1024 x 768.. play around with it until it is the desired size.
Some laptop monitors when put at 800 x 600 resolution simply make the entire screen smaller--somewhat irritating but fixable.

If you feel your computer screen is way small and not fixable through screen resolution or if its broken, then no need to worry, simply go and get a docking station and a flat screen monitor (think how big u need).
Then simple fold your laptop and attach it to the docking station, connecting all your accessories cables at the back.
Switch on your docking station and you have a big screen display now.

if changing the display properties does not work - ie right click anywhere on the desktop and select properties then settings - and changing the screen resolution try this
restart your computer - when it restarts start tapping the f8 key
then select enable vga mode
when it gets thro to windows - is it the same? either way
right click on my computer > then properties > then hardware > then device manager
click on the plus next to display
now right click on your graphix card / chip and uninstall
do not restart yes
Now go down to the ide ata/atapi controllers - click on the plus - do the same right click on the ide primary channel then uninstall - restart then when it prompts restart again
see if this works
if not when the computer usually starts you usually het a prompt to press a certain key to enter startup - press this key
if your screen is still small - then you have a hardware problem
hope this helps

PC - Start Menu --> Control Panels --> Display
Mac - Apple Menu --> System Preferences --> Display
And browse through your options. I don't know exactly where in those Display preferences you'll find them, but they should be there.
