No, neither of you will feel it being cut. There are no nerves running though it.

Before it's cut, the doc will put a clamp on 2 parts of the cord (this is to keep the blood on each side because the cord is the blood supply from you to the baby, so each of you could bleed if it wasn't clamped) and the cut will be made between those 2 clamps.

Another special plastic clamp will be put on the baby close to it's body and a medication will be put on it (usually blue) to dry it up. Once it dries some the clamp comes off and then the "stump' will be like a big scab. It will have to continue to dry up (usually your doc will have you putting alcohol on it with each diaper change), and eventually it will fall off and your baby will have it's belly button!

For you, the cord is attached to the placenta and when it comes out, after your baby is born, the cord will be attached to that. Where the placenta was attached is like a big sore that will need to heal up too. They will give you some medication to have your uterus "cramp up" and seal it off. They'll also teach you have to massage your belly to have it do it too. This will cut down on the bleeding you will have. Make sure to remember to do it.

Good luck!

There are no nerves in the umbilical cord..and the cut is made at least a half inch or more away from the body...so no..The baby won't feel it being cut off.

Of Course Not! It just bleeds, because it was attatched to you and you was giving the baby nutrients by it! The only thing they feel is when it falls off, & dr.'s say it doesn't hurt!

No - and neither can the mother - it's an organ that is about to detach from the mother - naturally and harmlessly - and not part of the baby at all.
