iPod won't charge/be recognized by computer?

My ipod Shuffle will neither charged or be recognized by either of my computers (a Mac and a PC) Both have iTunes, and both recognized it and charged it until a couple of months ago. We got it as a prize, and so the bank we got it from bought it in November of 2004, which makes us over the time limit to talk with an online chatter about what to do. Any suggestions?

I have tried again and again to recharge it. It's been in there hours, and the light is still red
