Brilliant question - and one I've often pondered.

I'm very cynical - and I believe that the only true love (ie selfless and eternal) is the love a parent has for their child.

Romantic love is made up of many different things - need, lust, desire to procreate etc.

However, it's impossible to generalise. If a person feels that they are in love, then they are.

Love does exist. But when you build a relationship on romantic love it will sell you short. Genuine love is the love that endures.
It is the love where one person hold the others head while they are sick. The one that endures crisis and with it comes period of Romantic love.
Romantic love is something little girls learn from Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Things start out bad and then Prince Charming (who by the way, doesn't exist) sweep in and makes the gal a Princess ( who by the way also is not).
We have to change our perspective of what love is if we will be successful in love.

love is a basic need, be it romantic love, love for cars, money, chocolates, jewels, people...everyone needs love. without it, life would be meaningless, and yes, some people would see no point in hooking up with others to find a 'soulmate'. some people however, cant have kids, it usually doesnt stop them loving each other, unless their love was shaky and one partner leaves due to the childless situation.
be that as it may, what would life be like if for example, we could see no colours, smell no fragrances, taste no food we relished, do nothing that makes our minds sizzle with enjoyment... you'd wanna stop living altogether wouldnt you, i know i would... to search for romantic love is an ideal which one might never achieve, so sometimes we need to lessen our expectations and simply settle for the next best thing from there. some people actually do find the person of their dreams, only to find that they've got hidden flaws which arent impressive at all. so, when romantic love fades, true love sets in, the kind that loves, warts and all...now that is true love...once you have that with someone, you know you are loved, and that you're free to love in return, that if anything in this life, is beautiful. i hope that some day you will find this, God bless, Whizzdom.

It's all another way of viewing the world -
