More in general: why can't marketing involve competition directly?

It is generally considered to be in bad taste to talk bad directly about your competition. I seriously doubt that coca cola has to worry about pepsi running them out of business, so why stoop to that level.

To give you the best answer from someone who has worked in Branding for several agencies at for a major franchise....it has to fit into the brand strategy and talking about Pepsi doesnt.

It's not too technical or deep at all. It's more of a strategy. Trust me if talking about Coke fit into their strategy for a specific campaign or initiative...they would do it.

Some companies even do it just to generate a buzz...or so they think..it also depends on what consumers will think and what their target market is..how will they be viewed? will people connect emotionally, but then feel for the underdog and not the youthful competitive spirit of the ad campaign?

Understand...goood!!!

Now your a genius...great question my friend..keep'em coming..

Two companies dominate the market, but there's other soft drink companies, as well.

Any 'challenges' to each other needs to be kept mild and light-hearted.

It doesn't pay for Coke and Pepsi to trash each other if the end result is reduced sales for both and increased sales for some third company.

Plus, any trash talk needs to be backed with legitimate evidence/sources or a company could be sued for liable.

Speaking bad of your competition pulls you down in the eyes of the public. No company wants that. Ever see shoe stores all packed along the same street? The idea is good for each of the stores, it brings the buyers in. Same with Coke, sell the public on drinking soft drinks. All soda companies prosper.

Darn, I can't remember the wording exactly, but a compnay cannot directly comment on another company unless it is already owned, operated or affiliated to them- otherwise it's a bit like slander...

They kind of do.

Remember that one commercial where they put the Coke vending machine in, and nobody bought anything. Then, the Pepsi one went in, and it was off the hook.
