First and perhaps foremost, you should know that a TRUE Satanist (as opposed to the thrash-metal, uninformed, self-proclaimed teenage variety) is NOT "evil". A genuine Satanist no more subscribes to nor "worships" evil than he subscribes to or worships anything other than Himself.
Did you know Satanism's "biggest holiday" is ones own birthday?
As to Crowley: he was on many levels a brilliant man. A voracious student and translator of antique occult practice; a natural linguist; a man unafraid to shake a prissy, post-Victorian society by its ankles. He was also a shameless showman and consummate bullsh!tter. But...
his primary interests, as you clearly know, were in "High" Magic; complex ritual practice that called upon dark forces as often and as readily as godly ones.
And he certainly was an "enlightened adept". After all, when one takes over the occult establishment of the day as forcefully as he did, one can bestow upon oneself as many and as exalted titles available to ones imagination.
Of course, he had nothing if not a fertile imagination.
He died a horn-dog and drug addict (plans similar to my own), but he lived a bigger life--both of the body and the mind--than an easy two-thirds of this planet could conceive of.
But "evil"? No.
Hitler and Stalin were evil.
Aleister was a zeitgeist all his own.

In the final analysis rather a sad ridiculous figure. The whole Magick/Golden Dawn stuff does have a serious side, but I cannot find any real substance in it, I could be wrong.
Crowley was undoubtedly a talented man, but so is Derren Brown or David Blaine. What I find most annoying is the posing that a lot of these types (like Magregor Mathers) went in for. Crowley was the worst of the lot, coupled with the fact that he probably did do some pretty creepy things, including possibly murder then I would class him as a classic case of wasted potential and a complete dead end - if you are truly interested in the esoteric.
