It's a second marriage for both of us. No fancy wedding has been planned. It's not an angry breakup, but because of mutual love and affection will be very sorrowful for both of us.

I think it would be appropriate that the engagement ring is offered back......he may decide not to take it back considering the circumstances of the break up but I still think the offer should be made ....its just politeness really! x good luck x

Yes, I think an engagement ring should always be returned no matter what the circumstances are for the breakup. But if he refuses to take it back, then it would be okay to keep it.

Actually there is likely case law in your state for this - my guess it is something like - if the gal breaks off the engagement she has to return it - if the guy breakes it off she does not - check with a lawyer in your state
Under any circumstances it would be classy to offer it back

The engagement ring and other engagement gifts should be returned by each party in the relationship.

BTW: For an interesting discussion of the history and legalities of broken engagements, see http://www.tushnet.com/law/rules.html.

Yes an engagement is a promise to marry. If you are not marrying, give the ring back.

Talk about it and as a female, I do think the decent thing to do is give the ring back. I know it's not easy asking it back, but you might want to ask her if it's all right for you to collect it.

The ring was a gift to her therefore making it hers to do with it what she wants. If the man is going to be a jerk about it and want to cause trouble and threatens to sue her for it, then she should give it back and release herself from any hassles about it.

Traditionally, the ring should be returned. But nowadays I think it's up to the couple.
