Better to say that the buttock is positioned and shaped to protect the anus, In most mammals the anus is a maximum distance from the mouth simply to allow maximum length to the digestive tract, it takes time to get the most from food. The upright posture of man of course means our legs extend beyond the anus but the position remains consistent with other mammals. The buttocks is shaped to protect the function and allow the body to excrete.

The buttocks do add a good cushion and decent protection to a rather sensitive area of the body.

Where else would you put it? Food flows downhill from your mouth to your anus. Would it have been better to place it in the middle of the back (thus shortening the intestines accordingly?)?

It's so you don't have to look at your own poo. It's bad enough we have to smell it.
