I had a Yamaha 650 Special when I started out. But my ex put lowering blocks on it just so my feet would hit the ground. That put all the bumps in the road on my butt. Not good. Then I got a Honda Rebel. That is one sweet small but racey bike. I would get a Honda Rebel if I was just starting out again. They are beautiful bikes and they go fast enough for you on the open road, but are light enough if you dump it, you can pick it up again. I'm 5' 4", and was very comfortable on this bike.

A Sportster is kind of heavy for a beginner, especially if you're average woman sized. They're usually something that you will benefit from either experience at keeping a bike upright or a fair amount of brawn to keep it from tipping over (So, if you're a more Amazon type, it may be less trouble). There's quite a few people who have gotten one as a first bike. It's not an impossible bike to master, just a bit harder than some other choices.

Buell Blasts are pretty nice for newbies - they've designed it so as to need fewer maintenance items, and they're not very heavy. If you like the styling, go for it. You could even take the Harley Rider's Edge classes and evaluate one there so you'll know if it is for you or not.

And if you don't take the Rider's Edge, I highly recommend taking the state-run motorcycle training program, usually the MSF Beginner's Rider Course. It'll give you a lot of useful practice and safe riding tips.

If you like cruiser styled bikes, you may want to start out with one of the smaller Japanese models. There's quite a lot of different options - go with something where you're comfortable with the fit and the weight.

Good luck.

What ever you do don't buy any Suzuki! My brother and I bought 2 new bikes for a summer vacation. His 1200 Bandit leaked gas and ruined the motor before it got 2000 miles. We asked Suzuki to replace the motor so we could go on vacation.
It took 2 months to get a rep, then he said it’s to expensive and would cost $3000. After 4 months and the vacation gone they got the motor rebuilt at a their cost of $3700. The dealer wanted to replace the motor but Suzuki Rep squashed that.
The gas stained cases and burnt exhaust pipes were not replaced. The bike got nicked and scratched all over from being apart for 6 months. The rep rode it and looked at it, then said it’ good as new. It ran like crap and looked worse.
We called Japan, and even wrote the US CEO all for nothing. We spent $15,000 for the bikes to get ripped off by Suzuki. We spent our vacation hassling with Suzuki, and not one person there gave a damn!
Beware Suzuki’s warranty is not worth the paper it’s on! Buy one of their lemons, get shafted, we did!
I’m a 30 yr garage vet and I know when a rep and a manufacturer have ripped off a customer. This one stinks to high heaven! RUN from buying any Suzuki!

If I was a girl and a newbe, go with the Blast.

Kawasaki 500cc Vulcan. Is light, and powerful for its size. I have known this to be a first bike for a couple of women. One lady eventually rode hers from South TX to northern Michigan.

The Honda Shadow 600 VLX is not quite as quick, but is stylish . Also low seat and makes good power for a V Twin. It will cruise with the big boys. . A woman rode one from NC to Irving, TX.

Both bikes are liquid cooled. That increases reliability and longevity of the bike.

Here's the bike I recommend for females who are small. Get the Kawasaki Ninja 250cc. It's a great bike, runs very fast and weighs less than 400 lbs. The seat is low enough for any female.
The bike will go over 110 MPH.

Better a "starter" Harley than a top-o-line "import".
