I agree that Lee was over-rated. His style of command lost him the Gettysburg Battle. Without a Stonewall Jackson, he was not the brilliant tactician as everyone makes him out to be. His command to Gen. Ewell on the first day of battle to take Culps Hill/Cemetery Hill "if at all practicable" was too vague.

And then his blunder on the third day, sending 12-15,000 men into entrenched positions against massed artillery over a clear field of fire was a total blunder. Didn't he see how effective such a defence was at Fredricksburg....it just burns me up.

To his credit, he was a beloved general, but he was highly over-rated.

My answer would be U. S. Grant. The only way he was able to defeat Lee was by using his overwelming numbers. As for Lee I have to agree somewhat. The only reason he won some of his early victories was a combination of poor leadership by the Union and, the brilliance of Jackson.

* "Vinegar" Joe Stillwell (WWII, Asia/China/Burma Theater)
* Any French General of WWI or WWII
* Most British Generals of WWI (The slaughter in trench warfare was horrendous and inexcusable)
* Colin Powell (Norman Schwarzkopf was the "troop on the ground" that got it all done, but Powell, sitting in Washington, got all the credit!)
* George Armstrong Custer (although he may have been only a colonel)

I'm going to disagree with you on Lee. He was afterall offered command of the Union Army by Lincoln. He was no doubt the finest general of the era.

Most overrated? I'm going with Andrew Jackson. One battle, caught an off balance opponent in a moment of ineptitude and the guy becomes president? PLEASE.
