Alexander the Great was easilly the greatest general in the history of the world. He managed to topple the extraordinarilly powerful Persian Empire in a few short years with no fleet and a very small army in comparison to the mighty Persians. What is more, is that he fought on the front lines of every single battle along the way. He captured an enormous ammount of territory in a very short ammount of time and in on long sustained campaign. There will never ever be another Alexander. Never.

How about the great Roman Cincinnatus? He walked off his farm, defeated a horde of barbarians in 16 days as a commander of the army, and then turned down power and went back to being a farmer.

You’d have to consider George Washington was well. Not brilliant, perhaps, but he defeated the greatest empire ever, in the history of the world up to that time, to win American freedom. He served as president, but perhaps more important than that he chaired the constitution committee to oversee the greatest contract between a government and a people ever written.

His service as president completed, he turned down calls to be appointed king and retired to private life. This example of service and following the law set the course for American democracy.

Alexander the Great (He conquer most of the know world at his time). But Genghis Khan also comes close too. And I will mention Hannibal, because he did march those elephants up the alps. :)

Ghengis Kahn without a doubt.

And in a way linking to your question on overrated generals I almost answered Hannibal. Look at his complete track record and you'll find a lot of medicrity.

If we go by land conquered, it's Alexander (Hannibal is over-rated).

Should it be the savagery and terror invoked, it certainly is Attila.

I'm sure there is someone in Chinese history, with the unification of China, but my knowledge is a bit thin.
