Nope. But you will need a mic to make voice calls or leave someone a voicemail. Otherwise its going to work without a problem.

You can use it w/o a mic. But what would be the use if the other person cant hear you? Unless you hear them, and you type back to them rather than speaking.

you will still have all the regular functions of IMing
you will even be able to hear people they just cant hear you
