A good advice giver will wait until asked before they give advice, unless there are extenuating circumstances. They will keep it simple and straightford wherever possible.
A know-it-all will jump into a conversation to offer their opinion whether you wanted it or not. They will insist that their idea is the best one and that they are right, where as a good advice giver will let you make up your own mind.

A good advise giver gives advice that is wise either because of experience of life or careful thought. My good advice givers are Christians who have lived a number of years and have proven to be wise in their counsel. Their instruction does not cause problems or harm to me and their advice keeps me from hurt and pains I might experience if I take wrong action.

Good Advice Giver would say
Look both ways before you cross the street
Know it all would say
Look 5 seconds 2X to the left and then look again before looking to the right

A good advice giver has nothing to gain from giving you advice.
A know-it-all just like to hear himself talk.
I am probably a little of both.

Sometimes the only way to tell is by testing the waters. People who typically give good advice are very knowledgeable in key areas but are willing to admit their lack of knowledge in others. However, there are some people who pride themselves in being well versed on an array of topics too. As such I think one has to look at the advice being given. If it is felt that it is truly taking the needs of the person seeking it in to account then it is probably good advice. Conversely if it appears that it is being given for no other reason than to allow the giver the opportunity to toot their own horn then one might want to seek additional advice from someone else. Key things I look for are the number of times my feelings or thoughts on the matter are sought verses the number of times the advisor reflects on their personal experiences. Also whether the advisor is willing to suggest things to me that differed from choices made for themselves given changes in today's perspectives. Most importantly, the degree to which they seem to want me to check back with them to let them know what decision or choice I made and to what degree they continue to provide ongoing support and encouragement during the process.

We all like to think that we know what is right and wrong, it is an ego booster to be able to teach or lecture (pontificate?). Anyways, I think that I am a bit of both, however, in regards to "advice", I like to call it ideas, or views, or encouragement. I don't like to advise people on much because I don't know a whole hell of a lot. I do know that I don't like telling people what they should and should not be doing, however, encouraging people lets them decide for themselves, so in a sense, a good advice giver can actually be a know it all, at least, this is my skewed logic.

Hi Jenfleur,
A good advice giver is someone who has lived and experienced similar things in their lives and whether the turn out was good or bad they learned something from it. A know it all is just someone who has an out of control ego, likes to hear themselves talk, and most of all wants to feel superior to you.

sure do, good advice giver, is a person and listens, and doesn't always gives the advice you want to hear, so saying that he will help you to find a good median for you to be satisfied, and a know- it -all, will take all of what you say and twist it to sound good, agree with you with out any hesitation, that is called a manipulator watch out

A good advise giver should tell you that ,this is just my opinion, you don't have to follow what I do,but it helped me. A know-it-all will get mad if you don't follow their advise because they do think they know-it-all.
