Before it became "chic" to wear che guevara apparel, his image was, and still is by many, seen as a symbol of the revolutionary spirit and stuggle against imperialism and oppression, especially among a high population of latin america and indigenous natives and farmers (campesinos). Do yourself a favor, read about him and Zapata, and even about the struggle in Chiapas and form your own opinions....and NO, RATM did not start the fad, they might've contributed to the popularity of his image being plastered everywhere, but that's been happening since his death. One could argue that the CIA (and bolivians) started the "fad" when they chose to have him murdered instead of captured alive, instantly propelling him into martyrdom.

People see a "rebel" and assume it's someone they can relate to. Most young people have an anti-authority stance that they tend to lose as they get older and get jobs. They never truly embrace authority but it's human nature to be somewhat anti authority in a free world. No one likes to be told what to do. But they fail to realize that Guevera was a Communist fighter who helped Castro overthrow Cuba. Batista was no saint but he wasn't a Communist either. Guevera murdered anyone who did not agree with him and he was the one who started the Cuban Labor camps. he was Castro's enforcer and was a ruthless killer. Castro did not trust him later on and sent him off to wars where he hoped he would be killed. Eventually he was. Today's youth with Park Avenue's help see's him as a renagade in a good way like Paul Revere or George Washington. He symbolizes the poor who usually feel a rebel like Che is trying to help them. They don't realize he is really trying to control them. Guevera and Castro were not good guys and should not be looked up to. But in America, sometimes it's anything for a buck.

He's become a symbol for socialism and the whole far left movement, although he's really controversial because he had so many people executed. You see his face so much, I think for some people it's probably just become a fad and they don't really know what it means, in fact I saw his face on a brand of pop. That was dumb.

It has been going on since the 70's popular among disenfranchised college students who really don't know much about Che or what he stood for.
Call them on their BS. If you see a girl with Che stuff, ask if she knows Che believed women should stay home and have children.

Because people think they know what he was all about. They want to wear his face to make themselves look like "rebels" or "revolutionists" when, in fact, they wear it to look stylish or look like they know a little bit more than everyone else (even though they usually don't). It's probably Rage Against the Machine's fault for the recent trend (it has been going on since the 70's), although they did truly want to spread a very serious message. But in the end, their message was wasted on rebellious teenagers and morons.

I don't see it as a fad necessarily. His image endures time because of what people think he stood for, or what his values were. There are some who don't know anything about him at all and do it because they saw some famous person wearing his face.
But I saw Motorcycle Diaries, great film about a brief time in his life that helped shape his ideology.

its a fad started by rage against the machine for putting his face on one of their albums.
People should actually read the history and see what great man Che was ...

If people only understood the man himself and everything he did throughout his life, I can say that most would not wear the shirts. Its called a fad - not history

Well, he rebelled against the government for socialism. People think that inequality is the root of evil so he is put up as a leader. Most don't know what a crappy leader he was, but he was successful for the most part.
